Marvelous Middle Grade Monday
I probably missed Chirp (Bloomsbury Children’s Books, 2020) by Kate Messner due to the pandemic, but am very glad to have caught up with it now.
The summer after 7th grade, Mia and her family move back to Vermont and she wishes the two years in Boston had never happened. Mom is making her choose two activities–one for her brain and one for her body–when Mia would rather just stay on the couch like she’s mostly been since her accident. New friendships, helping out Gram out with her cricket farm that she was supposed to sell, keeps her busy, but things keep reminding her of the secret she’s hiding.
This book is sooo good. It’s not just a making friends story, or a kid moving story, but so much more. So many layers.
And, yes, the bestselling author did eat crickets in her research for this story. Read more about Kate here and check out all her books here.
I’m so intrigued, both by the secret she is hiding and her accident, plus your recommendation is great! Thanks for sharing! 🙂
Woohoo!
I remember reading this one and after seeing your review, I’d like to read it again. Happy MMGM!
It is worth a reread.
Kate Messner is so talented. This sounds really intriguing, especially with the cricket farm aspect. I’ll definitely look for this one. Thanks for featuring it!
She really is!
I enjoy Kate Messner’s works and missed out on this one, too. Thanks for pointing it out!
You’re welcome.
Anybody who eats crickets to make sure their book is authentic gets an extra vote in my book. Although Kate Messner doesn’t need to do that–she’s an amazing writer!
ha ha
You have me interested with your mestion of the accident and the secret. I like Kate Messner’s work. I’ll check this one out. Thanks for the review.
Good!
You got me with the hints at a more complex story! I’m adding this one to The List.
Yea!
